Melanie DeBernardis

Melanie is a New York City based actress whose audacious free spirit, sass, and love of individuality lend perfectly to the counterculture characters she plays. She is known for her role as the Period Fairy in HelloFlo’s wildly viral ad campaigns; and as the deliciously villainous punk rock squatter Patsy in Fever Dreams Productions upcoming VOD series, Voodoo Church.

Extremely insightful from a very young age, Melanie has been honing her writing talents since she was four years old. Fortunately, she’s come a long way since she penned, “Jonny likes to ‘pik’ eggs”, her first story about an Easter egg hunt- though her mother has kept the original draft and would probably disagree. She currently co-writes, acts in, and produces Ditmars Angel’s, the comedic web series about an arbitrary dance troupe based in Queens; that is a semi-finalist for Best Comedic Web series in NEXtv’s Web Series and Indie Film Competition. She also loves writing and producing comedic shorts stamped with her signature wry twist on pop culture, ala’ Buzzfeed or SNL; that can be viewed on her Funny or Die channel.

Melanie shines the brightest in roles where she plays a strong, unconventional supporting character. She looks forward to continuing to blaze her unique path in the worlds of television and film.

Growing up in a Russian Orthodox household with 5 older half-siblings, a twin sister and younger brother, and an Italian-American dad (who passed too soon), one would say Melanie did not have the most traditional upbringing. She was exposed to cultures from around the globe from an early age, and she loved working as a teacher’s aide at a resource center for refugees; where her mother was a supervisor. There she cultivated an appreciation for diversity and realized her mantras, “work with what you’ve got,” and “flourish from where you are.” Melanie’s love of people, culture, and creativity led her to immersing herself in the arts program at Purchase College where she received a B.A. in Drama Studies.

Powerful, passionate women have always been a fascination of Melanie’s; and she seems to instinctively know these characters best. In college, she originated the role of  ‘Venus Victoria,’ a modern day goddess Aphrodite in her beloved theatre troupe ‘thebipolarmuseco.’s play mythologies. Her final project at Purchase was directing and analyzing Euripides’ Medea; where she took her artistic license and had two women on stage at the same time as opposed to the usual one; portraying Medea’s inner struggle. After college, a stand out character she portrayed was the manipulative news anchor Ashley in the play The Good News, in Algonquin Theatre’s One-Act Festival. The Good News beat out more than 350 one-act plays to take 1st place in the competition.
